Dr. Laura Morizio of Coast Psychology Moderates Long Island Panel on Youth Mental Health and Social Media
On October 16th, 2025, the Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club in Locust Valley, NY, hosted a powerful community event titled “Social Media, Mental Health & the Crisis Facing America’s Youth.” The panel brought together local leaders and mental health professionals to discuss the growing impact of social media on youth mental health and wellbeing.
The event was moderated by Dr. Laura J. Morizio, Clinical Director of Coast Psychology, a Long Island child and adolescent psychologist specializing in psychological testing and therapy for children, teens, and adults. Drawing on her experience as both a licensed psychologist and school psychologist, Dr. Morizio guided the discussion on the practical, emotional, and behavioral challenges facing today’s youth in our increasingly digital world.
A Community Response to the Mental Health Crisis Facing Teens
Expert panelists included:
Dr. Allison Eliscu, Division Chief of Adolescent Medicine, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital
Kristen Turnow, Superintendent of Schools, Locust Valley Central School District
Assembly Member Charles D. Lavine, New York State Assembly
Detective Antonio Pagan, NYPD SVU and FBI Task Force Officer
Together, they explored the alarming rise in anxiety, depression, and social isolation among teens from different perspectives—and how social media can influence self-esteem, relationships, and attention spans. The panel also discussed the roles that healthcare systems, schools, government, and law enforcement play in protecting children online, and shared practical digital safety tips for parents.
Helping Families Navigate the Digital World
The expert panelists emphasized that education, awareness, and open communication are key to helping children develop healthy online habits. Parents and educators were encouraged to model mindful technology use, set boundaries, and create environments where young people feel comfortable discussing their digital experiences.
